Service at the heart of the charism – a reflection from Sister Carol Jean Dust |
Once upon a time, there was a campus minister of a School Sister of Notre Dame (SSND) sponsored ministry who believed that service is at the heart of the SSND charism, of that which gives focus to the SSND life and mission. She wondered how she might make service happen with young women who could simultaneously learn more deeply of this charism. An inspiration of the Spirit came when she reflected on a past moment listening to sisters tell their stories of ministry. The inspiration led to possible scenarios and a new moment was birthed - invite the young women to serve with the sisters while living side by side with them … ah, yes, an “alternative spring break!”

Students explore SSND ministries for alternative spring break |
Students from Milwaukee’s Mount Mary University put aside typical spring break destinations to instead embark on a week of service and reflection in St. Louis. The students stayed at Sancta Maria in Ripa, enjoying meals and downtime with the sisters, but also putting in long days of work across several local ministries. From pulling honeysuckle at La Vista Ecological Center in nearby Godfrey, Illinois, to cleaning apartments on behalf of the Criminal Justice Ministry, the student teams, each led by local sisters, found meaning and memories in a different kind of spring break experience.

The Kyoto connection: Students and sisters celebrate a shared history |
Students from Notre Dame Jogakuin Jr. and Sr. High School in Kyoto, Japan, made a special stop in St. Louis during their recent trip to the U.S. While they spent barely a day on the ground in St. Louis before continuing to New York, the students were able to enjoy quality time with both sisters at Sancta Maria in Ripa and students at Notre Dame High School. Their whirlwind visit included lunch and classes at the high school, a meaningful tour of the Heritage Room and then a field trip downtown for sky-high cityscape views from the St. Louis Wheel, a 200-foot Ferris wheel at Union Station.
