Cristo Rey: Preparing the leaders of tomorrow

Cristo Rey Dallas (CRD) is a Catholic, College Prep high school committed to academic excellence, work study and a well-rounded school experience for students of all faiths. As an Affiliated Ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province (SSND), CRD is transforming the world through education. Sister Mary Anne Owens said, “SSND in the area have committed to supporting the school in many ways. To quote our foundress, Mother Theresa, ‘All beginnings are hard,’ but slowly the charism and stability of the school are growing with each new class."

SSND in North Dakota-Anti-Garb Law
The North Dakota Anti-Garb Law of 1948

September 1948 in North Dakota brought about an interesting side note in the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. A new school year was about to begin, and the teachers in Strasburg and Mantador, North Dakota, were about to have two unusual things in common. Not only would it be their first day teaching in a public school, but also it would be the first time that any of them would appear in their classrooms in civilian “garb” and not in their habits. The SSND North American Archives tells the fascinating story of the North Dakota Anti-Garb Law that went into effect in 1948. Read the full story at SSND North American Archives.
