The history of the Red Barn in Mankato, Minnesota |
SSND’s former province of Mankato, Minnesota, was established in 1910. Several parcels of land totaling roughly 50 acres were purchased or donated for the motherhouse and girls’ academy. The property became known as Good Counsel Hill or The Hill, due to the campus being located at the top of a large hill in the valley town. The Red Barn eventually became part of the property and continues as a symbol of SSND’s commitment to the precious gift of land and its responsible use throughout the Central Pacific Province. Reflections: The Easter season |
Sisters Gina Marie Redig and Lillia Langreck reflect on Easter, rebirth and the spring season. Natural burials: An eco-friendly alternative |
Natural burials started in the Central Pacific Province in 2015, with Sister Dorothy Olinger at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mankato, Minnesota. Sister Dorothy and Sister Kathleen Mary Kiemen, led the global education office in Mankato. Both of the sisters believed in and practiced green principles prior to their work with natural or green burials. The idea for a natural burial option grew out of the sisters' concern and love for the Earth. Read More »
