Meet Sister Kathleen Bauer

Kathleen Bauer, SSNDSister Kathleen Bauer was born in Robbinsdale, Minn. She professed first vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1978 in Mankato, Minn. For 25 years, she was a physical therapist in various settings in Minnesota, including Mankato Public School District, Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mankato, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Ebenezer Caroline Center in Minneapolis, Golden Valley Health Center in Golden Valley and Rehab Dynamics in Fridley, and New Ulm. From 1999 to 2012, she worked for Allina Health and managed various departments at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, Minn. Most recently, she served as Information Services Site Manager for Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

Sister Kathleen earned her bachelor’s in open studies in 1980 and bachelor’s in physical therapy in 1982 from Mayo Clinic and Mankato State University. She earned her master’s of business administration, with a focus in healthcare management and finance, from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., in 1995.

On how my ministries have prepared me for leadership …

Doing direct patient care as a physical therapist taught me what it takes to have courage, faith and vulnerability, along with sharing compassion, hope, patience and laughter with each person served. I’ve learned to welcome challenges as opportunities. I am aware that dialogue is essential — unilateral decisions never create engagement.

On models of Christian leadership …

Sister Mary Martin Tobias, SSND, never wavered from love. She accepted everyone, was often the first to ask for forgiveness and to forgive. A team player, she listened, laughed and loved life.

Connie Peterson was a wonderful boss, mentor and friend, recognizing the goodness in each person and taking the time to listen, affirm and gently challenge. I think her office was looked upon as a “confessional”; people came out feeling enlightened and empowered.

My Scripture life guide …

“Be still my love and know that I am God.” Psalm 46

My hope as we look ahead …

… that we will continue to be about the mission, that we embrace what it means to hold all in common as a province and as a congregation, that women will continue to engage with us as vowed members, and that our associates will be stronger than ever in promoting our charism and mission. And finally, that we respond to the needs of the world, with a focus on women, children and the Earth.
